The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) was created in 1986, through a merger of Canadian congregations of the American Lutheran Church, and the Canada Section of the
Lutheran Church in America. One change. Yet, every member of every church in every one of the newly created five synods across Canada would have felt the ripples. The bulb was planted. The life-experience of the ELCIC was about to grow.
As the ELCIC celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, the stage is set for a time of reflection. Not only on decades past, or on what lies ahead. This milestone provides an opportunity for the church to reflect upon what makes the ELCIC the ELCIC. What makes us Canadian Lutherans, what unites us? What reaffirms us on our faith journey? How have we intentionally cultivated our identity and values as a church, and how do we continue to uplift that which is important to us—what defines us—as we embrace the future of our church?
As the ELCIC celebrates 40 years, Colleen McGinnis reflects on the people, relationships and defining moments that have helped shape the church’s identity since 1986. Through stories from across the ELCIC, she explores the roots that have sustained the church, the connections that continue to strengthen it and the seeds being planted for the future.
