Affirming All

Listening to the Voices of All People and their Families in the Life of the Church

For many, it starts this way. A child comes to an (often early) understanding that their gender is not what has been assigned to them at birth. Alongside the challenges of growing up in that constant discernment, the young trans person soon realizes that even loving faith communities may not be truly ready for who they are.

In the 15 years since the ELCIC changed its policies on human sexuality at the 2011 National Convention, many important strides have been made toward more fully recognizing and celebrating the 2SLGBTQIA+ members of our church (now often bracketed by the word queer). Many parishes have worked hard to create a welcoming and affirming atmosphere grounded in parish welcome statements and engaging in processes such as becoming a “Reconciling in Christ” (RIC) congregation. The RIC process helps to educate churches on how to more fully embody what welcome means for folks who identify in the queer spectrum of identities. It also offers ongoing practices for continuing to improve and deepen educational awareness.

The June 2026 issues of Canada Lutheran touches on the subject of the voices and experiences of trans and non-binary people and their families in the life of the church. It explores the ongoing work of creating truly welcoming and affirming faith communities where all people can feel a sense of belonging.
