Thursdays in Black: Wearing Justice

The Global Ecumenical Stand Against Gender-Based Violence

On Thursdays across the ELCIC, you might notice a pattern of people in synod offices, seminaries, and churches across the country, all wearing one colour: black. This is a part of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Thursdays in Black movement, a global initiative targeted at fostering solidarity between partner congregations and survivors of gender-based violence.

Globally, one in three women have been subjected to some form of physical or sexual violence during their lifetime, according to the United Nations. In Canada, women are violently victimized at a rate nearly double that of men, and are five times more likely to experience sexual assault (Statistics Canada, Report on criminal victimization in Canada, 2019).

The October/November 2025 issue of Canada Lutheran touches on the sensitive issue of gender-based violence, while focusing on the Thursdays in Black movement. Learn more within.
