While taking care of a friend’s cabin, a former member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba was attacked by a man with an axe. As a Christian, he responded, “I don’t want this handled in the court but through mediation.” Mediation Services in Winnipeg handled the case. In which the victim actually had an opportunity to sit down with his attacker.
“For many offenders prison means simply being confined with little or no skill development, meaningful work, therapy or education. At worst, prison is a school of crime in a deviant subculture. The other reality is that most people in jail haven’t been convicted of a crime. They are awaiting trial.”
The ideas of using mediation and restorative justice in ways of alleviating jail time for prisoners is explored through the June 2016 issue of Canada Lutheran. The roles of the church and prison chaplains are explored, while thoughts on proper preparation and approaches for inmate visitation is highlighted.
