Rediscovering Reformation

Daring to Step Beyond Comfort Zones and Identity Markers

If a tree is planted in an urban park, does anybody know it’s to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation? Bonnie Bjornson along with 20 members of Ascension Lutheran Church in Edmonton know. They worked with the City of Edmonton to plant 197 shrubs, to be exact, on a hot, sunny Saturday in July.

“If you think about the legacy we have received from our foremothers and forefathers in the faith – we receive those things as a gift. At the same time we also recognize that this marks 500 years of separation from the Catholic Church, and as we know, God calls us to unity.”

The October/November 2016 issue of Canada Lutheran highlights the work of one Albertan congregation in partnership with the ELCIC’s Reformation Challenge, as well as provides a deeper insight into the joint Catholic – Lutheran Reformation Commemoration from Lund, Sweden in late October, 2016.
