It’s Christmas Eve and the worship service is nearing its conclusion. A flame from a small candle is passed along to ignite other candles held by parishioners. The church lights are dimmed and the only light comes from flickering candles as the strains of Silent Night, Holy Night! fill the building.

The December 2016 issue of Canada Lutheran dives into the numerous sorts of Christmas music. Many provide thoughts on ancient Christian traditions that have worked their way into the 21st century. While finding the appropriate time and place for traditional Christmas carols – as opposed to the use of secular holiday music – may be difficult, it has its rewards.
