Mental Wellness

Mental Illness is an Opportunity For us to Support Others

Through initiatives like Bell Canada’s “Let’s Talk” campaign, Canadians are increasingly aware of the reality of mental illness in our families, in our congregations and in our communities. One in five Canadians will experience a form of mental illness at some point in their life. In any given week, more than 500,000 Canadians are not going to work because of mental illness.

“Talking about mental illness leads us to conversations about mental wellness, and also about the normal human responses to grief, loss and change. Being mentally “well” is not just about the absence of diagnosable mental illness. It encompasses both how an individual is feeling and thinking personally, as well as how they are relating to their family and community.”

The April – May 2016 edition of the Canada Lutheran looks at the many forms of mental illness, and attempts to install the idea of ‘mental wellness’ into the reader’s mind. Mental health care is very much an issue that should pertain to all – from pastors to teenagers, to those struggling with addictions, to those involved in the world of business. It is omnipresent – let’s stay involved in the fight to turn mental illness into mental wellness.
