My last extended conversation with Susan Johnson was over dinner at a little bistro in the heart of Winnipeg’s French Quarter. She had recently been elected the fourth National Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. I invited her because she was new to town with an exceptionally busy job which would keep her away from home most of the time. That left her with little time to develop a social circle in her new city.
“I have grown as a person—in my skills and strengths, in confidence. My own spirituality has deepened. I have an ability now to articulate a vision and build consensus around it, more so than I thought coming into the position.”
