Parallel to racism, sexism and ageism, ableism encompasses discriminatory belief systems and behaviours that see and treat people with disabilities as less than fully human.
As a church and individuals, we need to confront where ableism exists and how it unfairly marginalizes a sector of the community. We need to discover what we can do to move away from stereotypes and practices that diminish and exclude those with disabilities rather than recognizing the richness they bring to the body of Christ and the family of God.
The September 2023 issue of Canada Lutheran takes a look at ways we as a Church need to better address issues of ableism within our congregations and physical church buildings.
