In early May, areas of the ABT Synod met under the theme “Feet Under Faith” for conversation and visioning and to form action plans as a community together.
There was an awesome energy fueled by attitudes of collaboration and consideration for the common good of our church family and communities. This “grassroots” gathering was flavoured by a higher level of awareness and openness to our need to change. Rev. Tim Wray, Dean of the South and Southwest Areas, said, “There also remains a humility that we don’t know, or need to know, how it will all turn out to proceed forward.”
The day began with a “World Café,” inviting people to talk over some guiding questions. This was followed by worship, and a time for Bishop Trish Schmermund to bring synod news. The afternoon included “Open Space Technology,” a time for community driven conversation and action planning. To wrap things up, we gave thanks to God in worship again.
It was impressive to see how many people came out of love for their God and this Lutheran Church, giving of their time and energy. The morning was filled with enthusiasm; as we worked and conversed deeply about our experiences and needs, energy dropped somewhat, yet those gathered remained committed. This was a working day after all! There was a common sense of the importance of the day and the essential nature of the work that needed attention.
Overall, more than 150 people gathered over the two weekends! Thanks to Campus Ministry in Calgary and Clint’s Kitchen (out of Olds, AB) in the North for feeding us well, to First Lutheran Church, Calgary and Peace Lutheran Church, Leduc, AB, for hosting these gatherings. We are reminded once again of the loving work God calls us into and we are excited to see how the Spirit will guide us.
