In 2016, Rev. Jason Johnson, St. John’s, Laird, challenged us to do something for our community and area. As a very small congregation, we needed to find a project that we could manage.
It was decided that we would host an annual brunch in the late fall and donate proceeds to the Good Neighbours Food Centre (Rosthern’s Food Bank), which serves the surrounding area.
An invitation was sent to the community at large as well as to the local Mennonite churches, Tiefengrund and Laird Mennonite. The groceries were purchased by our congregation or donated by members. Our only expense was the rental of the senior’s hall, and even that was picked up some years.
Over the past years, due to the generous donations received from the attendees, and the much appreciated grant from Nutrien, over $9,000 has been raised. Not only are we heeding the call of Jesus to feed the hungry, it is a fulfilling time of working together and good fellowship with our friends and neighbours.
Unfortunately with COVID-19, we were unable to carry out this mission in 2020. Instead, our congregation donated money to buy several for hampers and our members were encouraged to make private contributions. We are looking forward to the time when we will again be able to meet the challenge!—Barbara Schultz
