More than a year ago, in the summer of 2018, a young Regina man named Jeremy Campbell died in Japan. His grieving family and friends decided to raise money to sponsor a refugee family in Jeremy’s memory. The six Regina ELCIC congregations came together to share their resources, and the Regina Lutheran Refugee Committee (RLRC) was formed.
With guidance and moral support from Canadian Lutheran World Relief, the Campbell family and RLRC raised the fundsand submitted sponsorshipforms to bring Syrian refugee Abdulnaser Alkhatib, his wife Hiam Alshouli and their two small children to Canada.
Abdulnaser, like Jeremy, is his mother’syoungest son. His mother, his brothers and sisters, and many young nieces and nephews all reside in Regina. They were all there to welcome Abdulnaser and his family when they arrived at the Regina airport on Wed., Nov. 13, 2019.
Local Lutherans were also there, as were Jeremy’s sister Stephanie and his mother Shelley Rankin, as well as his father Bruce Campbell. Thanks be to God!—Meredith Cherland
