LuMinHoS was founded in 1980 by clergy who saw a need for consistent spiritual care for Lutherans from around the province who were admitted to Saskatoon hospitals. It began as the Lutheran Care Society. Ten years ago, it was renamed to Lutheran Ministry in Hospitals of Saskatoon (LuMinHoS). It is an inter-Lutheran ministry which supports a full-time hospital chaplain.
The evening of Sunday, May 4, Redeemer Saskatoon hosted a “Music Mosaic”: the first of three events of fun, fellowship and funding scheduled for this anniversary year. The program began with a warm welcome from host pastor, Rev. Trent Felstrom, and prayer by LuMinHoS chaplain Rev. Richard Engel. Rev. Harley Johnson was MC and Laura Tastad was pianist for congregational hymn singing. Trinity, Redeemer and Zion (ELCIC), Saskatoon, offered choir selections. A piano/saxaphone duet and a small vocal ensemble came from Good Shepherd, Saskatoon (ELCIC). St. John’s (LCC), Warman, brought a vocal duet and St. Paul’s (LCC), Saskatoon, brought a piano/violin duet. These numbers were interspersed with congregational hymns.
Prior to receiving the offering, board Chair Gord Martens, member of St. John’s and treasurer, Dan Hagen, member of Rock of Ages (Lutheran Brethren Church) brought updates, thanksgiving for faithful supporters and gratitude to God for never-failing guidance and support. Finally, Rev. Engel surprised the crowd with an unexpected benediction when he sat down at the piano and astounded us with a piano rendition of “Seek Ye First” with its familiar “Alleluias.” Redeemer’s Rebekah Circle served refreshments. To God be the Glory for a great time of praise, fellowship and generous support for this ministry. —Mary Anne Nostbakken
