I’m glad that Comparative Religion is being taught at our western seminary. However, I disagree that we can somehow mix and match theologies “to find a path that works for us as individuals.” Yes, we must develop and refine our personal theology, but for us Lutherans it is within a Christian framework.
God may be plural and truth often vague, but we should respect the first and most important commandment in the Bible, “You shall have no other gods” besides the God who guided our spiritual ancestors the Israelites, and who sent our Saviour into the world. Add to our theological “stream”, yes, but don’t let syncretism muddy the waters.—Rev. Jim Hill, Victoria
