…put on love that binds everything together.
—Colossians 3:14
It’s considered a soft subject,
but the hard truth is
love is not just a personal indulgence. In our culture
it is a social necessity.
The Christian message
dissolved tribal ties,
replaced them with individual faith. What, then, shall bind us together? The danger of social dissolution
was so severe,
Jesus made it a commandment,
his only commandment,
“that you love one another.”
That is not sentiment;
It is muscular requirement,
a political philosophy.
This is not about emotion,
I think;
it is a hardheaded decision
to value others
— all others —
like family.
