In a marvellous ELCIC National Convention, electing a strong national leader in Bishop Larry Kochendorfer, it was disappointing to see FEAR overpower the convention theme of HOPE—regarding the issue of allowing local lay leaders, under supervision, to provide sacramental ministry in local settings where necessary.
Do we not dare to trust God’s Spirit to guide in this change of practice?
Church protocol should not overrule the provision of service and ministry where needed, which I think was modelled by the approach of Jesus!
The decision to refer this matter to the National Church Council for study is what we have been doing for decades. “Study and delay” has become our sad mantra on this issue! It’s long-past time for at least this change in the life of our church.
May confident HOPE prevail over fear!
