Re: Generosity, July/August p. 10.
Why is it that we of the ELCIC have only one meaning for stewardship: $? To ignore Christ’s use of steward is to ignore the essence of who we are; stewards of the life God has given us in baptism and nurtured through Word and Sacrament.
Ownership rather than stewardship of what we have is one of our major problems. To convert it to generosity releases us from a life born through God’s giftedness to bless ourselves through generosity rather than give praise to the author and giver of life.
The steward is engaged in a life of giving—to his/her master, our Lord and our God. Both steward and generosity are words rich in relationship with Christ. Can we not shed our consumer-orientated approach to funding?
At the present rate of attrition we will probably cease to be ELCIC by 2025 or thereabouts, but there will be piles of $ gathering rust.
