Re: Regaining Sabbath July/August, p. 9.
I found this article as refreshing as the clean, cool air outside my window. With relief I renewed my commitment to practice idleness.
In The ‘Busy’ Trap (New York Times Opinion June 30, 2012) Tim Kreider states, “Idleness is not just a vacation, an indulgence or a vice; it is as indispensable to the brain as vitamin D is to the body…. The space and quiet that idleness provides is a necessary condition
for standing back from life and seeing it whole, for making unexpected connections and waiting for…inspiration…. ”
I was also reminded about Rachel Jonat’s The Minimalist Mom blog post about the culture of “busy” (July 9, 2012), and her desire to “live a life free of clutter—both physical and mental.”
Both authors talk about “being busy” as a choice, stressing that everyday life does not need to be as busy as we currently see in our culture. So, I cherish this reminder and will carry some suggestions into the rest of my week, so I can better nurture my family, my faith and myself.
