I can think of no better way to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation than to educate oneself by reading Experience and Faith: The Significance of Luther for Understanding Today’s Experiential Religion, Augsburg (1983).
The late William Hordern, president of Lutheran Theological Seminary Saskatoon (1966–85) wrote this book during the heyday of the confusing and upsetting “charismatic movement” in Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. It is just as relevant nowadays, when so many people who call themselves “spiritual but not religious” are seeking religious experiences that will bring them closer to God or the transcendental.
