Re: A radical story for Lent, March, p. 24.
Bishop Sid Haugen’s stimulating Lenten article on the temptations of Jesus brought to mind 1 Samuel 2:25, How the mighty are fallen in the midst of the battle!—the battle with COVID-19!? The “mighty”?—our society’s gods?: money/wealth, sports/entertainment, political power!?
In Bishop Sid’s article, those gods parallel the temptations of Jesus in the wilderness—“stones into bread”—money/wealth; “a temple-leap”—sports/entertainment; and to “rule the world”—political power in our day.
“Those three always work!”, says the frustrated Tempter through Bishop Sid. But they don’t! Within the span of a few short days, these gods in our society have been shattered. We have “seen it with our own eyes!”
Thank God for a foundation firm in our victorious Lord during these trying times—a foundation always dependable, though all else fails.—Bishop Allan Grundahl, Saskatoon
