As a recent widow of a fairly young age, I know loneliness each day. After work, once I open the door at the end of the day, I’m greeted with a huge void.
Hobbies, going to church or socials do not make up for the expanse of eating alone, doing household tasks by yourself, travelling alone; all without talking to a soul. A radio or TV is a poor substitute for the daily chatter you have with a loved one.
For years prior to my husband’s death, I often called family or friends whom I don’t see all that often. I was greeted with delight and the same response, “I thought of calling you but….” Sometimes we are so busy we forget to take a moment.
Recently I noticed an elderly woman from our congregation sitting in a local restaurant by herself. I was in a hurry but I stopped to say hello. She invited me to join her. We had a delightful conversation and meal and I surprised her by picking up the bill.
That’s all it takes. On my way to work, I pray, “Lord, let me be a blessing to someone today.” Simplistic as it sounds…but so many rewards.
