I was disappointed to read Bishop Johnson’s Canada Day message and her decision to abandon the red and white and in doing so, encouraged others to do the same. She had an opportunity to unite everyone with all that is good and instead chose divisiveness.
Clearly, residential schools and the issues surrounding them are reprehensible and deserve the reflection she encourages. Sadly, we can’t erase the past but we can learn from it. I believe part of any Canada Day should include thoughts of what we are thankful for and thoughts of what we aren’t.
Those that have come before us have provided countless reasons for us to be proud of a country that is welcoming, safe, prosperous and offers freedom and opportunity. Celebrating what is good and still reflecting what has gone on before are not mutually exclusive.- Lonnie Benson, Calgary
