Re: Called to study, Q & A, July/August, p.15
Thanks for this splendid piece. Readers cannot be reminded often enough about the wonderful heritage we have in these traditions of prayer and meditation—and of Luther’s insightful reminder that we are to model Christ in our prayer—and in our life!
One minor quibble, however. I heard a respected Luther scholar some years ago maintain that Luther’s insight is often misquoted. Luther’s original does not contain a diminutive. Luther does not say we are to be “little Christs.” He does say we are to be “Christ” to our neighbour.
That’s a nobler designation. The diminutive somehow suggests inferiority. There’s nothing inferior about being a “Christ” to others! Luther is saying we share Christ’s messiah-ship! That’s a heavy responsibility! And a glorious honour!
Thanks again for a splendid issue!
