It was with interest and dismay that I read the Q & A Why Have Pastors?, June p. 8. The question posed was, “If we are the priesthood of all believers, why do we need pastors?” If both the question and the answer are re ections of our church’s faith and ecclesiology, then it’s time we talked.
In fact, this will be part of my personal commemoration of Reformation 500, in 2017. I hope to provoke a conversation to refocus attention on the utterly alien nature of the gospel of Jesus Christ and its necessity for new life and the church; on the Office of Ministry as the institution that we Lutherans uphold for the sake of the authority and accountability for public ministry; and on the holiness of all vocations because of God’s enduring love for us and our world. I have in mind a discussion paper with the following title: 9.5 Theses for Reformation 500 and Beyond.
