In this day and age, our most valuable commodity is time, and prospective volunteers are busy people. They expect, and deserve, that congregations will respect their time and offer assignments that are clearly laid out and mission-driven. The old saying “we’ve always done it that way” is repulsive to a young volunteer. Setting expectations for results, creating policy frameworks for safety, and letting volunteers help to define the work will create a more willing and engaged volunteer force.
